3、alJournalforNumericalMethodsinEngineeringwhichstillremainstodaythemajorjournalinthis®eld.Therecipientof24honorarydegreesandmanymedals,ProfessorZienkiewiczisalsoamemberof®veacademies±anhonourhehasreceivedforhismanycontributionstothefundamentaldevelopmentsofthe
4、®niteelementmethod.In1978,hebecameaFellowoftheRoyalSocietyandtheRoyalAcademyofEngineering.ThiswasfollowedbyhiselectionasaforeignmembertotheU.S.AcademyofEngineering(1981),thePolishAcademyofScience(1985),theChineseAcademyofSciences(1998),andtheNationalAcademyof
5、Science,Italy(AcademiadeiLincei)(1999).Hepublishedthe®rsteditionofthisbookin1967anditremainedtheonlybookonthesubjectuntil1971.ProfessorR.L.Taylorhasmorethan35years'experienceinthemodellingandsimu-lationofstructuresandsolidcontinuaincludingtwoyearsinindustry.I
6、n1991hewaselectedtomembershipintheU.S.NationalAcademyofEngineeringinrecognitionofhiseducationalandresearchcontributionstothe®eldofcomputationalmechanics.HewasappointedastheT.Y.andMargaretLinProfessorofEngineeringin1992and,in1994,receivedtheBerkeleyCitation,th
7、ehighesthonourawardedbytheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley.In1997,ProfessorTaylorwasmadeaFellowintheU.S.AssociationforComputationalMechanicsandrecentlyhewaselectedFellowintheInternationalAssociationofComputationalMechanics,andwasawardedtheUSACMJohnvonNeumannMe
