3、ajorjournalinthis®eld.Therecipientof24honorarydegreesandmanymedals,ProfessorZienkiewiczisalsoamemberof®veacademies±anhonourhehasreceivedforhismanycontributionstothefundamentaldevelopmentsofthe®niteelementmethod.In1978,hebecameaFellowoftheRoyalSocietyandtheRoyalAcademyofEngineering.Thiswasfoll
4、owedbyhiselectionasaforeignmembertotheU.S.AcademyofEngineering(1981),thePolishAcademyofScience(1985),theChineseAcademyofSciences(1998),andtheNationalAcademyofScience,Italy(AcademiadeiLincei)(1999).Hepublishedthe®rsteditionofthisbookin1967anditremainedtheonlybookonthesubjectuntil1971.Professor
5、R.L.Taylorhasmorethan35years'experienceinthemodellingandsimu-lationofstructuresandsolidcontinuaincludingtwoyearsinindustry.In1991hewaselectedtomembershipintheU.S.NationalAcademyofEngineeringinrecognitionofhiseducationalandresearchcontributionstothe®eldofcomputationalmechanics.Hewasappointedas
6、theT.Y.andMargaretLinProfessorofEngineeringin1992and,in1994,receivedtheBerkeleyCitation,thehighesthonourawardedbytheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley.In1997,ProfessorTaylorwasmadeaFellowintheU.S.AssociationforComputationalMechanicsandrecentlyhewaselectedFellowintheInternationalAssociationofComp
7、utationalMechanics,andwasawardedtheUSACMJohnvonNeumannMedal.ProfessorTaylorhaswrittensev-eralcomputerprogramsfor®niteelementanalysisofstructuralandnon-structuralsystems,oneofwhich,FEAP,isusedworld-wideineducationandresearchenviron-ments.FEAPi
