3、dsinEngineeringwhichstillremainstodaythemajorjournalinthis®eld.Therecipientof24honorarydegreesandmanymedals,ProfessorZienkiewiczisalsoamemberof®veacademies±anhonourhehasreceivedforhismanycontributionstothefundamentaldevelopmentsofthe®niteelementmethod.In1978,hebecameaFell
4、owoftheRoyalSocietyandtheRoyalAcademyofEngineering.ThiswasfollowedbyhiselectionasaforeignmembertotheU.S.AcademyofEngineering(1981),thePolishAcademyofScience(1985),theChineseAcademyofSciences(1998),andtheNationalAcademyofScience,Italy(AcademiadeiLincei)(1999).Hepublishedth
5、e®rsteditionofthisbookin1967anditremainedtheonlybookonthesubjectuntil1971.ProfessorR.L.Taylorhasmorethan35years'experienceinthemodellingandsimu-lationofstructuresandsolidcontinuaincludingtwoyearsinindustry.In1991hewaselectedtomembershipintheU.S.NationalAcademyofEngineerin
6、ginrecognitionofhiseducationalandresearchcontributionstothe®eldofcomputationalmechanics.HewasappointedastheT.Y.andMargaretLinProfessorofEngineeringin1992and,in1994,receivedtheBerkeleyCitation,thehighesthonourawardedbytheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley.In1997,ProfessorTayl
7、orwasmadeaFellowintheU.S.AssociationforComputationalMechanicsandrecentlyhewaselectedFellowintheInternationalAssociationofComputationalMechanics,andwasawardedtheUSACMJohnvonNeumannMedal.ProfessorTaylorhaswrittenseveralcomputerprogramsfor®niteelementanalysisofstructuralandn
