3、r-encingonthepartofthehearer.However,thistheoreticalapproachdoesnotsatisfactorilyaccountforthefactthatconversationalparticipantsusuallydrawtheinferencesnecessarytoarriveatintendedinterpretationswithoutanynoticeableeffort.Furthermore,itdoesnotsys-tematic
4、allyspecifythekindsofinferencepatternsthatareneededforutteranceinterpretation.Weshowthatacognitiveapproachincorporatingthenotionofscenariostructurecanbefruit-fullyappliedtotheanalysisofconversation.Wearguethatwithininthisframeworkitisnec-essarytodisting
5、uishbetween'standfor'relations(i.e.metonymicrelationshipsproper)andweaker'pointto'relations(i.e.indexicalrelationships).Conceptualrelationshipssuchaspart-whole,cause-effect,ability-action,etc.,havemetonymicandindexicalfunctionandfacilitatetheinferential
