2、ticsfromNorthwestNormalUniversityofChina,andanM.A.intranslationstudiesfromLanzhouUniversity.SanghaspublishedanumberofarticlesontranslationbothinChinaandinHongKong.Recentlyhehasbeendoingresearchonthecognitiveandpragmaticstudyofliterarytranslation.AbstractAsonetypeofcross-cultural
3、communication,theliterarytranslationismoredifficultforthetranslatorashehastodealwithalargechunkofimplicitinformation.Theimplicitinformationhasasitscharacteristics,suchasgradedcommunicability,context-dependence,thecorrelationamongtheimplicitinformation,textandcontext,etc.Thesecha
4、racteristicsrestrictthecommunicabilityoftheliterarytextsinanothercontext,sothetranslatoroftheliterarytextsoftenfindsmoredifficultiesintranslating.EncouragedbyGutt’stheoryandhisrecentfindings,thisarticleadoptsarelevancetheoryapproachandattemptstopresentacognitivestudyoftheimplici
5、tinformationinliterarytexts.Itexperimentswithbuildinganexplanatoryframeworkfortranslatingtheimplicitinformationinliterarytexts.Theframeworkisbasedonanewnotion:translationisclues-basedinterpretiveuseoflanguageacrosslanguageboundaries.1.IntroductionLiteraryworks,whicharewrittentex
6、ts,arecharacterizedby“carefuluseoflanguage,beingwritteninaliterarygenre(poetry,prosefiction,ordrama),beingreadaesthetically,andcontainingmanyweakimplicatures”(Meyer1997:24).Theweakimplicaturesaretheimplicitinformationintheliterarytexts.Ontheonehand,owingtotheimplicitinformationi
