5、volvesashiftfromaconsciouslyapprehendedmetaphoricalblendtoaconsciouslyapprehendedfictionalsituation.Understandingthenatureofthisshiftinvolvestheissueofblending.Althoughalmostvacuousinitsmostgeneralversions,ifconstruedasatheoryofspecificallyfigurativeformsofth
6、ought,blendingtheorydoeshavecontent.Thereisasyethowevernoevidencefromexperimentalpsychologyfortheoccurrenceofblending.Theonlypresentlyavailableevidenceforthisistheconscioussenseoffusionassociatedwithnew,poeticmetaphorandrelatedphenomena.InBlake’s‘APoisonTree’
7、anallegoricalfictionemergesoutofablendwhosesettingupispromptedbyanextendedmetaphor,whichitselfinturnemergesoutofaconventionalmetaphorthat,almostcertainly,doesnotinvolveblending.Theanalysisof‘APoisonTree’castsvividlightontherelationsbetweenblending,allegoryand
