3、oundconvenientlyindictionaries.AccordingtotheWebster’sNewWorldDictionary,metaphorisdefinedas:“afigureofspeechinwhichonethingislikenedtoanother,differentthingbybeingsspokenofasifitweretheother;impliedcomparison,inwhichawordorphraseordinarilyandprimarilyuseofonethingisappliedtoanother.”(Web
4、ster’sNewWorldDictionary,1979:1132)Metaphorisusedasarhetoricaldevicewhichmakescomparisonbetweentwoelements,unlikesimile,thiskindofcomparisonisimpliednotstated.PeterNewmarkreferredtometaphoras:“thetransferredsenseofaphysicalword;thepersonificationofabstraction;theapplicationofawordorcolloc
5、ationtowhatitdoesnotliterallydenote,i.e.todescribeonethingintermsofanother.”(Newmark,2001:104)Metaphorshowsaresemblancebetweentwosimilarthings,whichmeansimageandobject.Incognitivelinguistics,itisdefinedasthetargetdomainandsourcedomain.Similarityisthebasisofmetaphor.Forexample,“thestarsinh
6、iseyes”,thebasisfortheuseof“stars”isthesimilaritybetweenthetearsinone’seyesandtheflickeringoflightinone’seyes.BothEnglishandChineseareaboundinusingmetaphors.Butdifferentmetaphorsmaybeunderstoodindifferentcultures.Thatistosay,metaphorisculture-specific.WemayhavedifferentkindsofmetaphorsinC
