4、iencedadeclineintheshareofurbanemploymentaccountedforbytherelativelydensemetropolitanareasandacorrespondingriseintheshareofrelativelylessdenseones.Thistrend,whichwecallemploymentdeconcentration,isdistinctfromtheotherwell-knownregionaltrend,namely,thepostwarmovementofjobsandpeoplefr
5、omthefrostbelttothesunbelt.Wealsoshowthatdeconcentrationhasbeenaccompaniedbyasimilartrendwithinmetropolitanareas,whereinemploymentshareofthedensersectionsofMSAshasdeclinedandthatofthelessdensesectionsrisen.Weprovideageneralequilibriummodelwithdensity-drivencongestioncoststosuggesta
6、nexplanationforemploymentdeconcentration.INTRODUCTIONIn1990,thestateofNebraskaandtheSanFranciscometropolitanareahadroughlythesamenumberofpeople.Ofcourse,whatdistinguishesSanFranciscofromNebraskaandmakesitrecognizableasametropolisisthatitspopulationdensityis1600whilethatofNebraskais
