2、thepastcoupleofyears,manyofthebidsfornewrollingstockplacedwithmajorinternationalsuppliershaveproposedtheuseofpermanent-magnetsynchronoustractionmotors,whicharesmallerandlighterthanthethree-phaseinductionmotorsthathavedominatedthemarketinrecenttimes.Permanent-magnetmotorsfirstcamet
3、oprominencewiththeuseoftwopoweredbogiesfromAlstom'sAGVintheV150trainsetwhichbroketheworldspeedrecordonApril32007,buttheyhavesubsequentlybeenusedinavarietyofapplications,rangingfromtheCitadis-Dualistram-traintoSBB'sTwindexxdouble-deckinter-citytrainsets(TableI).Althoughrailwayopera
4、torsareoftenviewedasconservativeintheadoptionofnewtechnologies,thedesignersandmanufacturersofrailtractionsystemstendtocapitaliseonthelatestdrivetechnologies,whicharerapidlydeployedinserviceiftheypromisesignificantperformanceimprovements.Thiswasthecasefortheearlychopperssupplyingse
5、ries-connectedDCtractionmotors,separately-excitedDCmotors,synchronousACmotorsanddrives(asusedonthefirstgenerationsofTGVs)andforthevariousgenerationsofasynchronous(squirrel-cage)three-phasedrives.Astechnologymovedforward,tractiondrivesbecamemoreefficientandmorecontrollable,allowing
6、betteruseofavailableadhesionwhilereducingenergyconsumption.Thepermanent-magnetsynchronousmachine,withitsassociatedcontrolelectronics,representsthelatestsuchadvanceintractiontechnology.MillionsofsmallPMSMsarealreadybeingusedinthetransmissionsofhybridcars,thankstotheirlowmassandgood
