3、motorsfirstcametoprominencewiththeuseoftwopoweredbogiesfromAlstom'sAGVintheV150trainsetwhichbroketheworldspeedrecordonApril32007,buttheyhavesubsequentlybeenusedinavarietyofapplications,rangingfromtheCitadis-Dualistram-traintoSBB'sTwindexxdouble-deckinter-citytrainsets(Tabl
4、eI).Althoughrailwayoperatorsareoftenviewedasconservativeintheadoptionofnewtechnologies,thedesignersandmanufacturersofrailtractionsystemstendtocapitaliseonthelatestdrivetechnologies,whicharerapidlydeployedinserviceiftheypromisesignificantperformanceimprovements.Thiswastheca
5、sefortheearlychopperssupplyingseries-connectedDCtractionmotors,separately-excitedDCmotors,synchronousACmotorsanddrives(asusedonthefirstgenerationsofTGVs)andforthevariousgenerationsofasynchronous(squirrel-cage)three-phasedrives.Astechnologymovedforward,tractiondrivesbecamem
6、oreefficientandmorecontrollable,allowingbetteruseofavailableadhesionwhilereducingenergyconsumption.Thepermanent-magnetsynchronousmachine,withitsassociatedcontrolelectronics,representsthelatestsuchadvanceintractiontechnology.MillionsofsmallPMSMsarealreadybeingusedinthetrans
