2、lfailuremodes.Inthepastcoupleofyears,manyofthebidsfornewrollingstockplacedwithmajorinternationalsuppliershaveproposedtheuseofpermanent-magnetsynchronoustractionmotors,whicharesmallerandlighterthanthethree-phaseinductionmotorsthathavedominatedthemarketinrecenttimes.
3、Permanent-magnetmotorsfirstcametoprominencewiththeuseoftwopoweredbogiesfromAlstom'sAGVintheV150trainsetwhichbroketheworldspeedrecordonApril32007,buttheyhavesubsequentlybeenusedinavarietyofapplications,rangingfromtheCitadis-Dualistram-traintoSBB'sTwindexxdouble-deck
4、inter-citytrainsets(TableI).Althoughrailwayoperatorsareoftenviewedasconservativeintheadoptionofnewtechnologies,thedesignersandmanufacturersofrailtractionsystemstendtocapitaliseonthelatestdrivetechnologies,whicharerapidlydeployedinserviceiftheypromisesignificantperf
5、ormanceimprovements.Thiswasthecasefortheearlychopperssupplyingseries-connectedDCtractionmotors,separately-excitedDCmotors,synchronousACmotorsanddrives(asusedonthefirstgenerationsofTGVs)andforthevariousgenerationsofasynchronous(squirrel-cage)three-phasedrives.Astech
6、nologymovedforward,tractiondrivesbecamemoreefficientandmorecontrollable,allowingbetteruseofavailableadhesionwhilereducingenergyconsumption.Thepermanent-magnetsynchronousmachine,withitsassociatedcontrolelectronics,representsthelatestsuchadvanceintractiontechnology.M
