2、ionofEnglishpronunciationskillsamongChineseEFLlearnersinurbanareastakingChongqingasanexampleinaformalsetting.1.2SignificanceofthestudyIn2001,NationalEducationCommitteestipulatedthatEnglishlessonsshouldbestartedfromGradethreeofprimaryschoolsincitiesandotherareasifconditionpermits.From
3、thenon,almostallthecitiesandruralareasbegantoinstructEnglishinprimaryschools,evenkindergartensinsomedevelopedcities(e.g.Shanghai).Alsoatleastthreelessonsperweekshouldbeguaranteed.However,thereisnoclearevidencethat“theearlierthebetter”indevelopedurbanareas.Therefore,investigatingtheea
4、rlyEnglishinstructionforChineseEFLlearnersinurbanareashasgreateducationalsignificance.Furthermore,therewerefewresearchesinvestigatingtheeffectsofage,exposureandtheirinteractiononsecondlanguagepronunciationskillsbothathomeandabroad.Therefore,itisofgreatsignificancetoprovidetheoretical
5、evidenceforCriticalPeriodHypothesisinsecondlanguagelearning.Finally,languagepronunciationisimportantforlanguagelearnerstounderstandortobeunderstood.While,forthereasonofexamination-orientededucationsysteminChinainrecentyears,languagepronunciationhasnotbeenbroughttotheforefronteveninde
6、velopedurbanareas.Hence,thecurrentstudyattemptstoinvestigateEnglishpronunciationskillssuchasvowelsandconsonants,elisionandassimilation,liaison,intonation,pauseandrhythmandstress.Therefore,itishopefullythatthestudycouldsupplyateachingandpracticalsignificancetoEnglishpronunciationteach
