3、llremainstodaythemajorjournalinthis®eld.Therecipientof24honorarydegreesandmanymedals,ProfessorZienkiewiczisalsoamemberof®veacademies±anhonourhehasreceivedforhismanycontributionstothefundamentaldevelopmentsofthe®niteelementmethod.In1978,hebecameaFellowoftheRoyalSocietyandtheRoyalAcade
4、myofEngineering.ThiswasfollowedbyhiselectionasaforeignmembertotheU.S.AcademyofEngineering(1981),thePolishAcademyofScience(1985),theChineseAcademyofSciences(1998),andtheNationalAcademyofScience,Italy(AcademiadeiLincei)(1999).Hepublishedthe®rsteditionofthisbookin1967anditremainedtheonl
5、ybookonthesubjectuntil1971.ProfessorR.L.Taylorhasmorethan35years'experienceinthemodellingandsimu-lationofstructuresandsolidcontinuaincludingtwoyearsinindustry.In1991hewaselectedtomembershipintheU.S.NationalAcademyofEngineeringinrecognitionofhiseducationalandresearchcontributionstothe
6、®eldofcomputationalmechanics.HewasappointedastheT.Y.andMargaretLinProfessorofEngineeringin1992and,in1994,receivedtheBerkeleyCitation,thehighesthonourawardedbytheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley.In1997,ProfessorTaylorwasmadeaFellowintheU.S.AssociationforComputationalMechanicsandrecentl
7、yhewaselectedFellowintheInternationalAssociationofComputationalMechanics,andwasawardedtheUSACMJohnvonNeumannMedal.ProfessorTaylorhaswrittensev-eralcomputerprogramsfor®niteelementanalysisofstructuralandnon-structuralsystems,oneofwhich,FEAP,isusedworld-wideineducationandresearchenviron
