1、1IntroductionIdiomisderivedfromtheGreek“Idioma”and“idiomatikos”,whichmeanspeculiarorpeculiarity.AlthoughlinguistsofdifferentagesdifferfromeachotheronthescopeofEnglishidiom,inabroadsense,idiomswithagreatnumberofvocabularies,mayinclude“setphrases,proverbs,sayings,epigrams,slangexpressions,colloq
2、uialisms,quotations,two-partallegoricalsayingsofwhichthefirstpartisalwaysdescriptive,whilethesecondpartoftencarriesthemessage”[1].NotonlydothelinguistsofdifferentagesdisagreewitheachotheronthescopeofEnglishidiom,theyhavealsomadedifferentdefinitionsofit.ButwhilestudyingsomanydocumentsaboutEngli
3、shidiomofdifferenttimes,youcanfindthattheolderthedocumentsare,themoreindistinctthedefinitionsare.Forexample,somelinguistsjustdefinedtheidiomas“anacceptedphrase,construction,orexpression,whichisdifferentfromtheliteral”[1].Englishidiomsarefixedexpressionsorphrases,oftencarryingspecialmeaningstha
4、tcannotbeguessedfromtheirindividualparts.Theyoftenhaveadistantoriginandalongdevelopment,fullofrelativelystrongnationalcoloringorlocalfeatures,widelyusedamongthepeopleandestablishedbythepeoplethroughlongsocialpractice.Someoftheidiomsarevivid,humorousandexplicit,whileothersareimplicit,containing
5、morethanonemeaning,andcanbringvarietiesofassociations.Soyouhavetojudgethemeaningfromthewholetext.Idiomsarethelanguageordialectofpeople,ofaregionandaclass,etc.Andtheyarethespecialwayofpeopleexpressingtheirculture,region,ideasandlifepatterns,etc.Theyhavecharacteristicsofnationality,regionalism,a
6、ndfixednessofstructures.Collocatedbymorethantwowordscustomarily,theyarefixedphrases,prohibitinganychangeofwordsorofeachindividualpartoftheidiomfromeachotheratwill.Forexample,“kickthebucket”ismadeupofthreemorphemes,andcannotbeaddedorreducedfreely.Itcannotbechangedtobe“kickthebigbucket”,or“kickt
