5、scollaborationwithAlexanderHamiltonandJohnJayproducedtheFederalistPapers(1788),whichbecamethemostinfluentialexplanationanddefenseoftheConstitutionafteritspublication.Madison'smostdistinctivebeliefasapoliticaltheoristwastheprincipleofdividedpower.Madisonbelievedthat"parchmentbarriers"we
6、renotsufficienttoprotecttherightsofcitizens.Powermustbedivided,bothbetweenfederalandstategovernments(federalism),andwithinthefederalgovernment(checksandbalances)toprotectindividualrightsfromthetyrannyofthemajority.Madisonin1789becamealeaderinthenewHouseofRepresentatives,draftingmanybas
