3、tweenthemanufactureofcomplexproductssuchasships,aircraftandcarsandtheexecutionofaparallelprogram.Themanufactureofashipiscarriedoutaccordingtoaproductionplanwhichensuresthatallthecomponentscometogetherattherighttimeattherightplace.Aparallelcomputerapplicationshouldensurethattheappropriatedat

4、aisavailableontheappropriateprocessorinatimelyfashion.Itisnotsurprising,therefore,thatmanufacturingisplaguedbyindeterminacyexactlyasareparallelprogramsexecutingonmulti-processorhardware.Thishascausedanumberofresearchersinproductionengineeringtoseekinspirationinotherareaswheremanagingcomplex

5、ityandunpredictabilityisimportant.Anumberofnewparadigms,suchasHolonicManufacturingandFractalFactorieshaveemerged[1,2]whichcontainideasratherreminiscentofthosetobefoundinthefieldofMulti-AgentSystems[3,4].Manufacturingtasksareanalogoustooperationscarriedoutondata,withinthecontextofplanning,sc

6、hedulingandcontrol.Also,complexproductsareassembledatphysicallydistributedworkshopsorproductionfacilities,sothecomponentsmustbetransportedbetweenthem.Thisisanalogoustocommunicationofdatabetweenprocessorsinaparallelcomputer,whichthusalsomakescleartheanalogybetweenworkshopsandprocessors.There
