3、uireprecisefrequencysweepssuchasradarchirpsorfastfrequencyhoppers.Withcontrolofthefrequencyoutputderivedfromthedigitalinputword,DDSsystemscanbeusedasaPLLallowingprecisefrequencychangesphasecontinuously.Aswillbeshown,DDSsystemscanalsobedesignedtocontrolthephaseoftheoutputcarrierusingadig
4、italphasewordinput.Withdigitalcontroloverthecarrierphase,ahighspectraldensityphasemodulatedcarriercaneasilybegenerated.ThisarticleisintendedtogivethereaderabasicunderstandingofaDDSdesign,andanunderstandingofthespuriousoutputresponse.Thisarticlewillalsopresentasampledesignrunningat45MHzi
5、nahighspeedfieldprogrammablegatearrayfromQuickLogic.AbasicDDSsystemconsistsofanumericallycontrolledoscillator(NCO)usedtogeneratetheoutputcarrierwave,andadigitaltoanalogconverter(DAC)usedtotakethedigitalsinusoidalwordfromtheNCOandgenerateasampledanalogcarrier.SincetheDACoutputissampledat
6、thereferenceclockfrequency,awaveformsmoothinglowpassfilteristypicallyusedtoeliminatealiascomponents.Figure1isabasicblockdiagramofatypicalDDSsystemdesign.ThegenerationoftheoutputcarrierfromthereferencesampleclockinputisperformedbytheNCO.ThebasiccomponentsoftheNCOareaphaseaccumulatorandas
