2、tboardadjustmentsoveryieldandtemperature.AdigitaldesignthatmeetsthesegoalsisaDirectDigitalSynthesizerDDS.ADDSsystemsimplytakesaconstantreferenceclockinputanddividesitdownatoaspecifiedoutputfrequencydigitallyquantizedorsampledatthereferenceclockfreque

3、ncy.ThisformoffrequencycontrolmakesDDSsystemsidealforsystemsthatrequireprecisefrequencysweepssuchasradarchirpsorfastfrequencyhoppers.Withcontrolofthefrequencyoutputderivedfromthedigitalinputword,DDSsystemscanbeusedasaPLLallowingprecisefrequencychange

4、sphasecontinuously.Aswillbeshown,DDSsystemscanalsobedesignedtocontrolthephaseoftheoutputcarrierusingadigitalphasewordinput.Withdigitalcontroloverthecarrierphase,ahighspectraldensityphasemodulatedcarriercaneasilybegenerated.Thisarticleisintendedtogive

5、thereaderabasicunderstandingofaDDSdesign,andanunderstandingofthespuriousoutputresponse.Thisarticlewillalsopresentasampledesignrunningat45MHzinahighspeedfieldprogrammablegatearrayfromQuickLogic.AbasicDDSsystemconsistsofanumericallycontrolledoscillator

6、(NCO)usedtogeneratetheoutputcarrierwave,andadigitaltoanalogconverter(DAC)usedtotakethedigitalsinusoidalwordfromtheNCOandgenerateasampledanalogcarrier.SincetheDACoutputissampledatthereferenceclockfrequency,awaveformsmoothinglowpassfilteristypicallyuse

7、dtoeliminatealiascomponents.Figure1isabasicblockdiagramofatypicalDDSsystemdesign.ThegenerationoftheoutputcarrierfromthereferencesampleclockinputisperformedbytheNCO.ThebasiccomponentsoftheNCOareaphaseaccumulatorandasinusoidalROMlookuptable.Anoptionalp

8、hasemodulatorcanalsobeincludeintheNCOdesign.ThisphasemodulatorwilladdphaseoffsettotheoutputofthephaseaccumulatorjustbeforetheROMlookuptable.ThiswillenhancetheDDSsystemdesignbyaddingthecapabilitiestophasemodulatethecarrieroutputoftheNCO.Figure2isadeta
