3、requencysweepssuchasradarchirpsorfastfrequencyhoppers.Withcontrolofthefrequencyoutputderivedfromthedigitalinputword,DDSsystemscanbeusedasaPLLallowingprecisefrequencychangesphasecontinuously.Aswillbeshown,DDSsystemscanalsobedesignedtocontrolthephaseoftheoutputcarrierusingadigitalphasewordinput
4、.Withdigitalcontroloverthecarrierphase,ahighspectraldensityphasemodulatedcarriercaneasilybegenerated.ThisarticleisintendedtogivethereaderabasicunderstandingofaDDSdesign,andanunderstandingofthespuriousoutputresponse.Thisarticlewillalsopresentasampledesignrunningat45MHzinahighspeedfieldprogramm
5、ablegatearrayfromQuickLogic.AbasicDDSsystemconsistsofanumericallycontrolledoscillator(NCO)usedtogeneratetheoutputcarrierwave,andadigitaltoanalogconverter(DAC)usedtotakethedigitalsinusoidalwordfromtheNCOandgenerateasampledanalogcarrier.SincetheDACoutputissampledatthereferenceclockfrequency,awa
6、veformsmoothinglowpassfilteristypicallyusedtoeliminatealiascomponents.Figure1isabasicblockdiagramofatypicalDDSsystemdesign.ThegenerationoftheoutputcarrierfromthereferencesampleclockinputisperformedbytheNCO.ThebasiccomponentsoftheNCOareaphaseaccumulatorandasinusoidalROMlookuptable.Anoptionalph
