4、iticalsystemandtheformationofabourgeoispublicsphere.Specialsubjectsoftheseminarwillincludetheroleofreligiousdisputesintheformationofreformprogramsintheeighteenthcentury;processesandimplicationsofJewishEmancipation;theshiftingpatternsofreligiouspracticethatdevelopedint
5、henineteenthcentury;France’sparticularrelationwithIslamasaresultofitsconquestofAlgeria;theroleofreligiously-basedpoliticalmovementsinthecrisisoftheliberalstateinthelatenineteenthandearlytwentiethcenturies;theambivalentrelationshipofthechurchestoNationalSocialismandthe
6、Vichyregime;theroleoforganizedreligioninthereconstructionandtransformationoftheEuropeanstateattheconclusionofWorldWarII;theeffectsofdecolonizationontheplaceandnatureofIslamandJudaisminFrance;and,theroleoftheChurchindividedGermanyandintheprocessofreunification.Wewillal
7、soconsidertheoppositiontoorganizedreligionandtotheChurchesofferedbytheLeftandtheRightinthenineteenthandtwentiethcenturies,aspartofthelargerdebateabouttheextenttowhichcorporatenormsandvaluesshould(orshouldnot)beabletoinfluenceciviclifeandcontrolcultureinthemodernlibera
