3、ks.Ofcourse,notallintellectualswerecriticalorbyanymeansprogressive.Withtheriseofmodernsocieties,therewasadivisionbetweenphysicalandmentallabor,andintellectualsbecamethosewhospecializedinmentallabor,producinganddistributingideasandculture,withsomeopposing
4、andsomelegitimatingtheestablishedformsofsociety.Thus,intellectualsweresplitintothosecriticalandoppositionalindividualswhoopposedinjusticeandoppression,ascontrastedtothoseproducersofideologywholegitimatedtheformsofclass,race,andgenderdominationandinequali
5、tyinmodernsocieties.Inthefollowingreflections,Iwanttodiscusssomechallengesfrompostmoderntheorytotheclassicalconceptionsofthecriticalintellectualandsomeofthewaysthatnewtechnologiesandnewpublicspheresoffernewpossibilitiesfordemocraticdiscussionandintervent
6、ion,whichcallforaredefinitionoftheintellectual.Consequently,Iwilldiscusssomechangesintheconceptofthepublicsphereandhownewtechnologiesandnewspheresofpublicdebateandconflictsuggestsomenewpossibilitiesforredefiningintellectualsinthepresentera.ThePublicSpher
7、eandtheIntellectualJurgenHabermas'sconceptofthepublicspheredescribedaspaceofinstitutionsandpracticesbetweentheprivateinterestsofthoseincivilsocietyandtherealmofstatepower.Thepublicspherethusmediatesbetweenthedomainsofthefamilyandtheworkplace--whereprivat
