2、ofresearchacknowledgesthatthedimensionofsocioculturalorcontextualfactorsalsodeservecarefulconsideration.Withinthelineofinquirywithanemphasisonsocioculturalorcontextualfactors,researchontheconstitutionofstudentidentitiesinrelationtodevelopmentoftalkinclasshasgreatpotentialtoprovideaneworwiderperspe
3、ctiveontheinherentproblemofEFLclassroominteraction.Informedbypositioningtheoryofidentity,thispaperaimstoexplorethefeasibilityofpositioningstudentsbasedonculturalandregionalidentitiesaswellasitseffectonEFLclassroominteractioninChina.Basedontheethnographyofcommunication(EC),whichcanbeusedtostudytheu
4、seoflanguagerelatedtosocialandculturalvalues,threesecond-yearclassesrandomlychosenfromacollegewereobservedforanacademicyear.Interactionsbetweenateacherandstudentswereaudio-recordedandsemi-structuredinterviewswerealsoconducted.Specificallythispaperfocusedonanddiscursivelyanalyzedthreeeventsofthetea
5、cher’spositioningsofhisstudentsfromtheirsomewhatdifferentsocioculturalbackgrounds.ThefirstextractwaschoseninthatapairofstudentswithfardifferentEnglishproficiencywasinvolvedinthediscussion.Thesecondonewasconcernedwithapoorstudentwhonevervoluntarilyengagedinclassroomactivities.Thenitwasfollowedbythe
6、extractthreeonastudentwhowasunderachievinginthesubjectofEnglish.Ithasbeenfoundinallthreeeventsthat(1)unliketheircounterpartsinESLcontexts,thethreeEFLcollegestudentsembracedtheteacher’ssocialpositioningtoassumeculturalandregionalidentitiesinclasses.(2)ThethreeunderachieversintheirL2learningallmadev
