3、2 Introduction WilliamFaulknerisoneofthegreatestAmericansouthernwritersofthetwentiethcenturyduringwhichtheAmericanSouthundergoneprofoundsocialandhistoricalchanges.RichardKingcommentedthatasthesouthernwritersafterthelate1920s,WilliamFaulknerwas“en
4、gagedinanattempttocometotermsnotonlywiththeinheritedvaluesofthesoutherntraditionbutalsowithacertainwayofperceivinganddealingwiththepast,Nietzschecalled‘monumental’historicalconsciousness”.1ThesouthernerssufferedalotduringandaftertheCivilWar,becauseth
5、eyhadtoacceptthefactthattheprosperityandhonoroftheSouthernwasgonewiththeinvasionofcapitalismcivilization——commercialeconomyofCapitalismdestroyedtheirParadiseoftheextravagantplantationlifebutatthesametimewhatalsobroughtaboomingcommercialeconomy,theref
