2、rbutbecameapilotintheCanadianFlyingCorps.AfterthewarheattendedtheUniversityofMississippiforatimeandthenforseveralyearsdidoddjobsofmanykinds.WhileworkinginNewOrleanshemetSherwoodAnderson,thenovelist,whoencouragedhim:asaresulthewrotehisfirstnovel,Soldier'sPay(1926).Othersfollowed.
3、Itwasin1929,theyearofhismarriage,thathetookajobascoal-beareronnight-workatthelocalpowerstationandwroteAsIlayDying(193o)betweenthehoursofmidnightand4a.m.duringaspaceofsixsummerweeks.HenextwroteSanctuary,intendingittobesensationalenoughtoattractsales,whichhadnotbeengoodonhisearlie
4、rbooks.LaterheworkedonscriptsinHollywood,simplyforthemoney.NotlongbeforehisdeathinJuly,1962,WilliamFaulknermovedhishometoCharlottesville,Virginia.HewasawardedtheNobelPrizeforLiteraturein1949.HisotherbooksincludeLightinAugust(1932),TheWildPalms(1939),Godown,Moses(1944),Intruderin
