2、theBuddhistmonasteryofNishiHongwanjiinKyoto,Japan,in1917.AftersubsequentstudiesattheSorbonneandtheUniversityofBerlin,hereceivedhisD.Phil.fromChristChurchCollege,Oxford,in1922.From1919to1927,McGovernheldappointmentsaslecturerand/orexaminerinOrientalStudiesattheUniversityofLondon.Hisserviceth
3、erewasinterruptedbytwoextendedexpeditions,onetoTibetin1922-23,thesecondthroughtheupperAmazonbasinandPeruin1925-26.Ontheformertrip,afterbeingrefusedentryintothecountryvianormalchannels,hedisguisedhimselfasaTibetancoolieandsucceededinenteringthecapitalcityofLhasa,oneofthefirstWesternerstodoso
4、.ThisadventurewasrecountedinMcGovern'smostpopularwork,ToLhasainDisguise.In1927McGovernreturnedtotheUnitedStateasAssistantCuratoroftheAnthropologyDepartmentatChicago'sFieldMuseumofNaturalHistory.In1929hewasappointedAssociateProfessorofPoliticalScienceatNorthwestern;hewaspromotedtofullprofess
5、orin1936andheldthatpositionuntilhisdeathin1964,developingareputationasanexceptionallyentertainingclassroomlecturer.McGovern'sserviceatNorthwesternwasinterruptedbyastintasFarEastcorrespondentfortheChicagoTimesin1937-38;byavisitingappointmentaslectureringovernmentatHarvardUniversityin1940-41;
6、andbyserviceintheUnitedStatesNavalReservefrom1941through1945.Beginningin1952,helecturedperiodicallyonmilitaryintelligenceandstrategyintheNaval,Air,andArmyWarColleges.Hewasalsoindemandasapopularlecturer,andpublishednumerousarticlesandninescholarlybooksinadditiontohistravelnarratives,ToLhasai
