5、lleague,D.D.Luckenbill,itwasquiteclearthatinundertakingthenewposttheonlyconditionstowhichhecouldpossiblyconsentwouldbesuchasmightenablehim,besideshisteachingduties,tocontinuehisuntiringapplicationtoproduc-tiveoriginalworkbothathomeandinthefield.Hewasalreadyunderadefini
6、tecontracttospendthenextyearinfieldworkinancientAssyria,andhisappointmenttotheUniversityofChicagowasaccordinglymadesubjecttothiscontract.HisfirstyearofservicewiththeOrien-talInstitutewasthereforespentinthefield.Thiswas,however,apassingandincidentalad-justment.Thefundam
