4、lost,theArabicandSyriacmanuscriptstreatingofearlychemistryarepreservedinconsiderablenumbersinthevariouslibrariesofEurope,andhaveonlybeenimperiectlyexplored.Unfortunately,thepresenteditorhasneithertheopportunitynorthequalificationsforundertakingsuchatask.TherearetwocodicesorrecensionsofTheTu
5、rbaPhilosophorum,whichdifferconsiderablyfromoneanother.Whatiscalledinthefollowingpagesthesecondrecension,isappreciablyshorter,clearer,and,onthewhole,thelesscorruptofthetwo,buttheyareboth2094035ii.Preface.inabadstate.Thelongerrecensionhasbeenchosenforthetextofthefollowingtranslation,becausei
6、tseemeddesirabletogivetheworkinitsentirety.Thevariationsofthesecondrecensionareappendedusuallyinfoot-notes,butwherethereadingofthetextissocorruptastobequiteuntranslatable,theeditorhasoccasionallysubstitutedthatofthealternativeversion,andhasinmostcasesindicatedthecoursepursued.MonsieurBerthe
