2、ofcarcinomaofthestomachishigherinthosesubjectswhobelongtobloodgroupAthaninthoseofbloodgroup0.Thispaperprovidedastimulusforseveralinvestigations,andby1959Lavenharinareviewwasabletolistresultsfrom12differentcenters.Theseshowedthatthemeanincidenceofcancer

3、ofthestomachwas21percenthigheringroupAthaningroup0;thedatathereforeprovidegeneralconfirmationofthefindingsofAirdetal.Inonecenterwith1,146cases,however,nodifferencebetweenthetwoinci-dencerateswasfound,andintwoothercentersthedifferencewassmallandinsignif

4、icant.Inthesecircumstancesitisworthwhiletoinvestigateasug-gestionfirstmadebyJenningsetal.'thattherelationshipbetweenbloodgroupandcarcinomaofthestomachmightvaryaccordingtothesiteofthelesionwithinthestomach.Thepresentinterimreportisbasedonthefirsthalfoft

5、hedatawearecollectinginordertotestthishypothesis.MATERIALSANDMETHODSTheanalysiscovers707casesofgastriccarcinomaregisteredattheDivisionofCancerandOtherChronicDiseases,ConnecticutStateDepartmentofHealth,duringtheperiod1950to1953.Anadditional439casesregis

6、teredduringthisperiodwereomittedfromthefinalanalysisbecauseinformationaboutbloodgrouporsiteoflesionwasnotavailable.Hospitalrecordsoneachpatientwereconsultedtoobtaindataonthesiteofthelesion.In37percentofthecasesthesitewasobtainedfromthepathologist'srepo

7、rt,andintheremainderthedecisionwasbasedonthefindingsatoperationoratradio-graphicexamination.UsingthecriteriaofBillington,'weclassifiedthesiteofthelesionas:(a)pylorusandantrum,(b)bodyandfundus,and(c)cardia.In48casestheinvolvementwassoextensivethatthesit
