2、)ArrerntespeakerslivinginAliceSprings.2.1ThelanguageanditsspeakersEasternandCentralArrernteare,fromalinguist’sstandpoint,dialectsofonelanguagewhichissimplylabelledEasternArrernte.EasternArrerntebelongstotheArandicgroupwithinthePama-NyunganfamilyofAustralianlanguages.Othermemb
3、ersoftheArandicgroupincludeKaytetye,Alyawarr,Anmatyerr,WesternArrernteandLowerArrernte.EasternArrerntetraditionallycoveredanareaofmorethan40,000squarekilometresintheCentralAustraliandesert,encompassingtheEasternMacdonellandHartsRangesandregionsoftheSimpsonDesert.Neighbouringl
4、anguagesare(or,traditionally,were):AnmatyerrandAlyawarrtothenorth,WesternArrernteandLuritjatothewestandsouth-west,LowerArrernte,PitjantjatjaraandYankunytjatjaratothesouth,andtheArabaniclanguagestotheeast.Itisestimatedthatthereareapproximately2,000speakersofEasternArrernte,mak
5、ingitoneofthehealthiestAustralianlanguages.Thelanguageisindailyuseandchildrenarestilllearningitasafirstlanguage.Infact,itisusedIamindebtedtoalltheArrernte-speakingcommunitiesandindividualswhopatientlytoleratedmypresenceandquestionsbetweentheyears1982and2000.TheworkonArrerntesp
6、atiallanguagewasespeciallyfacilitatedbythreeimportantArrernteteachers–MargaretHeffernan,VeronicaDobsonandRosalieRiley–intheperiod1993–9.FieldworkinthatperiodwasfundedbytheMaxPlanckGesellschaft.ThehomeofRobertHoogenraadandthatofSueMorrishandJohnBoffaprovidedahavenforworkandcol
