1、3SketchofaJaminjunggrammarofspaceEvaSchultze-Berndt3.1IntroductionTheaimofthispaperistodescribethesystemsofspatialorientationandthelinguisticresourcesthatareemployedindescriptionsofspatialrelationsandmotioneventsinJaminjung,anAustralianlanguage.ThemostnotablefeaturesofJaminjunginthisdomainare,first,

2、theexistenceoftwodistinctpredicativewordclasses,verbsandcoverbs.Theseshowacleardivisionoflabourwithrespecttotheexpressionbothofspatialrelationsandofthecomponentsofmotionevents.Inmotionexpressions,verbsencodeonlythefactofmotionandthe‘anchoring’ofthepath,whilebothmannerofmotionandotheraspectsofthepat

3、hareexpressedbycoverbs.ThismeansthatJaminjungfallsoutsidetheverb-framed/satellite-framedtypologyasitiscurrentlyconceived.Thesecondinterestingfeature,whichisnotableinthatJaminjungdiffersinthisrespectfromotherAustralianlanguageswhosesystemofspatialorienta-tionhasbeeninvestigatedinmoredetail,istheexis

4、tenceofadrainage-basedabsoluteframeofreference,ratherthanonebasedoncompassdirections.Indescriptionsofsmall-scalespatialarrangements,however,speakersprefertoemployexpressionsbasedonanintrinsicframeofreference,orexpressionsdescribinganoverallconfiguration.Thepaperisstructuredasfollows:Section3.2presen
