4、bepossiblewithoutapropercommandofagreatvarietyoftechnologies,inparticularadvancedprocesscontrolanddiagnosticmethods.Notonlyhasthetechnologyprogressedandnewtechnologyemerged,butourunderstandingofthefundamentalsofunitprocesses,rawmaterialsandproductpropertieshasalsodeepen
5、edconsiderably.Thevariationsintheindustry'sheterogeneousrawmaterials,andthesophisticationofpulpingandpapermakingprocessesrequireaprofoundunderstandingofthemechanismsinvolved.Paperandboardproductsarecomplexinstructureandcontainmanydifferentcomponents.Therequirementsplace
6、donthewaytheseproductsperformarewide,variedandoftenconflicting.Thoseinvolvedinproductdevelopmentwillcontinuetoneedaprofoundunderstandingofthechemistryandphysicsofbothrawmaterialsandproductstructures.Paperhasplayedavitalroleintheculturaldevelopmentofmankind.Itstillhasake
7、yroleincommunicationandisneededinmanyotherareasofoursociety.Thereisnodoubtthatitwillcontinuetohaveanimportantplaceinthefuture.Papermust,however,maintainitscompetitivenessthroughcontinuousproductdevelopmentinordertomeettheever-increasingdemandsonitsperformance.Itmustalso
