2、chgroupdevelopedasetofcumulativeprogressindicators(CPIs)whichidentifieddesirableknowledgeandperformanceobjectivesfortheendofthefourth,eighth,and12thgradelevels.Asecondapproach,exemplifiedinthepresentdocument,ishorizontalorganizationwhichrelatestoscopeandsequenceorside-b

3、y-sideorganizationoftheelements.Thedocumentthatfollowsusesahorizontalapproachtoorganizethesocialstudiesstandardsforskills,civics,worldandUnitedStateshistories,geographyandeconomics.Thiscurriculum-guideapproach,orscopeandsequence,presentsthedevelopmentofthemajorthemesand

4、strandsforeachsubjectastheywouldbepresentedwithincreasinglevelsofcomplexityfromgradesKto12.BecausetheoriginalstrandsandCPIswerenotdevelopedinahorizontalfashion,theremaybegaps.AtthetimeofthedevelopmentoftheCCCS,aparalleleffortwasunderwaytodeveloppreschoollearningexpectat

5、ions.Thedocumentthatfollowsincludesexpectationsforpre-schoollearners,andhowitrelatestotheK-12CPIs.Ina“spiralcurriculum,”conceptsmaybeintroducedonasimplelevelintheearlygrades,thenrevisitedwithmoreandmorecomplexityandfurtherapplication.HoweverinWorldHistory,sometopicsares

6、pecifictogrades5-8only.Principlesofsequencinginclude1)simpletocomplex;2)determiningprerequisites;3)wholetopartlearning;and4)chronologicalsequencing(historical).ThehorizontaldesignpresentationoftheSocialStudiesStandardsthatfollowsisaguideforteachersandcurriculumdeveloper

7、stouseindevelopinglocalcurriculum.LocalcurriculumshouldincludetheCCCSandtherelatedCPIskills,instructionalactivitiesdevelopedbyteachers,alistingofresourcesforuseintheclassroom,guidingquestions,andassessmentstrategiesthatmeasuretheprogressofstudentsinmeetingtheCPIskills.N
