2、ion,restorationandreclamationandtowardswhatcanonlybecalledananti-social,negativeandanti-relationaltheoryofsexuality(Bersani,1986;Bersani,1996).Icallthisshift“counter-intuitive”becauseitupendsourunderstandingoftheinterconnectednessofintimacy,romanceandsexualcontactandreplacesitwithaharshbutradica
3、llyrealisticrecognitionofboththeselfishnessofsexanditsdestructivepower.Thesexualinstinctthen,withinthisformulation,nestlesupagainstthedeathdriveandconstitutesanoppositionalforcetowhatBersaniterms“thetyrannyoftheself”(Bersani,1999:p.4).Ratherthanalife-forceconnectingpleasuretolife,survivalandfutu
4、rity,sex,andparticularlyhomo-sexandreceptivesex,isadeathdrivethatundoestheself,releasestheselffromthedriveformasteryandcoherenceandresolution;"thevalueofsexualityitself,”writesBersani,“istodemeantheseriousnessofeffortstoredeemit”(Bersani.1997:p.222).Bersani’swork,whileitclearlysituatesitselfinre
5、lationtoaverywelldefinedcanonofgaymaleaestheticproductionbyJeanGenet,MarcelProustandothers,hasalsobeenusefulforthetheorizationoffemmereceptivities(Cvetkovich,2003)andbutchabjectionandlesbianloneliness(Love,2007).AndthepoliticsofBersani’sproject,totheextentthatonecanidentifyapoliticaltrajectorywi
6、thinaradicallynon-teleologicalproject,resideitsbrutalrejectionofthecomfortingplatitudesthatweusetocushionourfallintomortality,incoherenceandnon-mastery.Myownrecentworkisprofoundlyinfluencedbythisparticularstrandofqueertheoryandinabookinprogressonthepoliticsofknowledge,Itrytocapitalizeoncounter-i
