5、ghlevelsofresearchandcapitalinvestment.TheUKisrichincoal,naturalgasandoil.EnergyproductionisanimportantpartoftheUKeconomy,accountingfor10%GDP.Sincethe1970s,whenoilandgaswerediscoveredundertheNorthSea,Britainhasbecomeamajoroilandgasproducer,inadditiontoits
6、oldercoalminingindustry,whichnowonlyaccountsforabout1/4ofenergysupplies,therestbeingdividedbetweenoil,gas,andnuclearenergy.ThisabundanceofenergyresourcesmeansthattheUKhasbecomeanoverallexporterofenergy.Thetechnologyrequiredtoextractoilfromthedifficultoffs
