2、dGallaudetCollege.SophiaFowlerwasborndeafnearGuilford,Connecticut,onMarch20,1798.Atthattime,therewerenoschoolsforthedeafinAmerica.However,Sophiahadagoodmind.Sheusedherintellectandlearnedmanyskillsbywatchingthepeoplearoundher.Shelearnedtocookandsew,andbecameamodest,
3、gayandcharmingyounglady.SophiawasnineteenyearsoldwhenherparentslearnedthataschoolforthedeafhadbeenfoundedinHartford,Connecticut.Sheenteredtheschoolin1817andstayedthereuntilthespringof1821.Whileshewasthere,theprincipaloftheschool,ThomasHopkinsGallaudetfellinlovewith
4、herandaskedhertomarryhim.Sophiadidnothesitate,andmarriedhimin1821.AsMrsGallaudet,shecontinuedtocharmthepeopleshemet.Shewaseagertolearnfromeverysocialsituation.Throughhercontactwiththemanyvisitorstoherhome,shewasactuallyabletocontinuehereducation.ThomasHopkinsGallau
5、detdiedin1851,leavinghiswifetomakealifewithouthim.However,hereightchildrendidnotleaveherwithoutsupport.Withthehelpofhergrownchildren,shecontinuedtokeephouseforthosechildrenthathadnotyetmarried.In1857,MrsGallaudet'syoungestson,EdwardMinerGallaudet,becameprincipaloft
6、heColumbiaInstitutionfortheDeafinWashington,D.C.Hewasonly20yearsonlyatthetime,buthisambitionwastoestablishacollegeforthedeaf.Hismothersharedhisdreamandwork.SheusuallymetwithmembersofCongressandotherprominentmeninordertogainsupportforhergoals.Throughthem,shehelpedto
7、obtainfundstofoundandmaintainGallaudetCollege.MrsGallaudetservedasmatronoftheColumbiaInstitutionfortheDeaf(nowKendallDemonstrationSchoolandGallaudetCollege)fornineyears.Thisincludedtwoyearsasheadofthedepartmentthattaughtmanyofthehouseholdskillsthatshehadlearnedasac
