2、tedtothedeaf-blind.EveryyearthelastweekofJuneisdevotedtoonething--recognitionofthedeaf-blindpeopleinourmidst.WhilethepurposeofDeaf-BlindAwarenessWeekistopayhomagetoHelenKeller,thedeaf-blindwomanwhowasbornthatweek,theweekfocusesonincreasingpublicawarenessandunderstandin

3、gofdeaf-blindness.AccordingtotheHelenKellerNationalCenter(HKNC),about70,000peoplehavehearingandvisionloss.Morethanadecadeago,Deaf-BlindAwarenessWeekbecameaneventofficiallyrecognizedbytheFederalgovernment.ThestoryofHelenKelleriswellknown.BornonJune27,1880,thehealthyinfa

4、ntwasdevelopingnormally.Butattheageof19months,anillnessleftherdeafandblind.WhenHelenwassix,herequallyfamousteacher,AnneSullivan,wasabletoteachhertocommunicate.HelenKellerwentontoexcelinallaspectsofherlife:graduatingfromcollegewithhonorsandwriting,lecturing,andinspiring

5、peopleworldwide.ThenextistheproclamationofHelenKellerDeaf-BlindAwarenessWeekmadebyUSpresidentRonaldReagan:Proclamation5214--HelenKellerDeaf-BlindAwarenessWeekJune22,1984BythePresidentoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica KellerandherteacherAnneSullivanOureyesandearsprovidevitalwa
