2、ncessantlyforthebettermentofothers.HelenwasborninTuscumbia,AlabamaonJune27,1880.However,herreallifebeganonedayinMarchof1887,whenshewasalmostsevenyearsold.ShewasalwaystocallthatthemostimportantdayIcanrememberinmylife.ItwasthedaywhenAnnieSullivan,a20-year-oldgraduateofthePerkinsSchoo
3、lfortheBlind,cametobeherteacher.TheywereinseparableuntilAnnie’sdeathin1936.EvenasalittlegirlHelenexpressedadesiretogotocollege.In1900,sheenteredRadcliffeCollegeandgraduatedfromtherecumlaudein1904.Shethusbecamethefirstdeaf-blindpersontograduatefromcollege.Throughouttheseyears,AnnieS
4、ullivanlaboriouslyspelledbooksandlecturesintoherpupil'shand.WhilestillatRadcliffe,HelenKellerbeganthewritingcareer,whichwastocontinuefor50years.InadditiontoTheStoryofMyLife,shewrote11otherbooksandnumerousarticlesonblindness,deafness,socialissuesandwomen'srights.Despitethebroadrange
5、ofherinterests,HelenKellerneverlostsightoftheneedsofotherswhowereblindanddeaf-blind.ShewasapersonalfriendofDr.PeterJ.Salmon,ExecutiveDirectorofHelenKellerServicesfortheBlind(thenknownastheIndustrialHomefortheBlind)andlenthersupporttotheestablishmentofwhathasbecomeknownastheHelenKel
6、lerNationalCenterfortheDeaf-BlindYouthsandAdults.ShewasavisitortoanumberoffacilitiesandprogramsoperatedbyIHB.In1936,HelenKellermovedtoWestport,Connecticut,wheresheliveduntilherdeathonJune1,1968,attheageof87.Inhiseulogyatherfuneral,SenatorListerHillsaidofher,"Shewillliveon,oneofthef
