3、enconductingtheoreticalresearchandpracticalresearch,betweenquantitativeandqualitativeperspectives,andbetweenpersonalandexternalmotivationsfordoingresearch.Thedataalsoillustrateshowteachers’conceptionsofsuchissuesareinformedbymultipleandsometimesconflictingsourcesofadviceand

5、arylevelinChinawhoteachEnglishtoundergraduateandgraduatestudentswhodonotmajorinEnglish(EnglishmajorsaretaughtbyteachersfromEnglishdepartments).ThedramaticincreaseofstudentenrollmentinChinesetertiaryinstitutionsinrecentdecadeshasledtounbalancedteacher—studentratiosinCEeducat

6、ion.By2003,thenumberofuniversitystudentsexceeded19millionwhileCEteacherstotalledonlyabout50,000(Wen&Hu,2007).TensionsinTeachers’ConceptionsofResearch:InsightsfromBy2010,thenumberofCEteachersincreasedtoaround60,000(Zhang,2010),butthisstilldidnotmeetthedemandofthecontinuously

7、increasingcollegiatepopulation.Consequently,CEteachershavearelativelyheavierworkloadofteachingthantheteachersofotherprogramsintertiaryinstitutions.Inadditiontotheirteachingresponsibilities,CEteachersarealsoexpectedtodoresearchasacademicfacultyofuniversities.Inrecentyears,re
