2、nMarch30,1835atGrootZundertintheDutchprovinceofNoordBrabant.Hewasthesonofaclergyman.Hisfirstartisticimpressionswereformedasaboy,fromhisunclewhowasanartdealer.Themotivationboreearlyfruitandfromtheageof12theyoungVincentwasdrawing.Theinterestledtoanapprenticeshipinanartdealer’sfirm,Groupil’s,int

3、heHague.Whenhewasonly20,hewastransferredtothefirm’sLondonoffice. InLondonVanGoghfacedhisfirstmajorcrisis,whenhewasrejectedinlove.Afterthat,heturnedtoreligion,expresseddisapprovalwithart-dealingandneglectedhiswork,GroupiltransferredhimfromLondontoParisbut,whenhisworkwasstillunsatisfactory,dism

4、issedhimin1876. TheyoungVanGoghmadereligionaconsuminginterestandduringthenextfewyearstraveledinBritain,BelgiumandHolland,tryingtoestablishhimselfasapreacher,butwithoutsuccess.Hedevelopedstrongopinionsonsocialmorality,customsandchurchlifeandalienatedthosehemixedwithbyanuncompromisingattitude. 

5、In1880,attheageof27,hefoundhimselfdrawnbacktoart.HehadajobasanassistantevangelistintheminingvillageofBorinageinBelgiumbutrealizedanartisticdrivewhichwastomotivatehimunceasinglyuntilhisdeath10yearslater. AlthoughhereturnedtoNoordBrabantandhisfamilyearlyin1881,hisfirstrecognizedworksweresetinBo

6、rinageandreflectedtheruralcultureinwhichhewaslivingandhisbeliefinorderandsymmetryinbothsocietyandart.TheperiodresultedinwhatbecameknownastheBrabantcanvases. Atthistimehewasbecomingobsessedwithartisticdevelopment.Althoughhewaslimitedinpracticalexperience,hisworkshowedconfidenceandmaturityfromt
