3、onDr.JamesMielkeDr.DeborahSmiththDateAccepted:June14,2010iiAbstractInthepastfewdecades,researchersusinghumanmitochondrialDNA(mt-DNA)havesignificantlycontributedtoourknowledgeofhumanevolutionandmigration.TheArabianPeninsulaisassumedtobeoneofthefirstinhabitedregionsfollowingtheexpa
4、nsionofearlyHomosapiensoutofAfrica.KuwaitislocatedintheNortheastportionoftheArabianPeninsula.ThisthesisinvestigatedthemitochondrialDNA(mtDNA)geneticvariationin117unrelatedindividualstodeterminethegeneticstructureoftheKuwaitipopulationandcomparedtheKuwaitipopulationtotheirneighbor
5、ingpopulations.Restrictionfragmentlengthpolymorphism(RFLP)andmt-DNAsequencinganalyseswereusedtoanswertheinvestigatedquestions.TheresultshowedthattheKuwaitipopulationhasahighfrequencyofhaplogrouppre-HVsimilartootherArabianpopulations.Furthermore,theMDSplotshowedthattheKuwaitipopul
