2、itheliaareverysusceptibletoinfectionwiththevirus,interferonIandIIIwerebothabletosignificantlyreduceitsreplicationincellculture.HCoV-EMCisassociatedwithsimilarsymptomstosevereacuterespiratorysyndrome(SARS),suchasfever,cough,andbreathingdifficulties.Itisalsobelievedtohaveazoonoticor
3、igin,becauseitiscloselyrelatedtobatcoronaviruses.Humanairwayepithelium(HAE)isacommoninfectiontargetforrespiratoryviruses.UsinganHAEcellculture,RonaldDijkman(InstituteofImmunobiology,KantonalHospital,StGallen,Switzerland)andcolleaguesinvestigatedthemechanismofinfectionofHCoV-EMCand
4、assessedpossibletreatmentsforthevirus.HCoV-EMCwaseasilyabletoinfecttheHAEcellsand“likeothercoronaviruses,evadesinnateimmunerecognition,reflectedbythelackofinterferonandminimalinflammatorycytokineexpressionfollowinginfection,”writeDijkmanandteaminmBio.Notably,treatmentwithinterfero
5、nIandIII–cytokinesabletointerferewiththereplicationofcertainviruses–significantlyreducedtheviralloadintheinfectedHAEcells.TheresearchershopetheirfindingswillhelpscientistsdevelopatreatmentforHCoV-EMC.Todate,only12casesofthevirushavebeenconfirmedinthelaboratory(fiveinSaudiArabia,fo
6、urintheUK,twoinJordan,andoneinGermany),althoughco-authorofthestudyVolkerThiel,alsofromtheInstituteofImmunobiologyattheKantonalHospital,believesmorepeoplemaybeinfected.“Wedon'tknowwhetherthecasesweobservearethetipoftheiceberg,”saysThielinapressstatement.“Orwhethermanymorepeoplearei
