3、transcriptionpolymerasechainreaction.Laboratory-documentedinflu-enza(LDI)wasdetectedbyserologicassayandculture.HCoVillnesseswerecomparedwithotheracuterespiratoryillnessesidentifiedbyactivesurveillance,duringthe1998–99winterrespiratory-virusseason,of2215patientswithchronicob
4、structivepulmonarydiseasewhowere$50yearsoldandwhoreceivedinfluenzavaccines.Results.HCoV-229EandHCoV-OC43wereassociatedwith90(14%)of665illnesses(HCoV-229Ein22,HCoV-OC43in67,andbothin1),LDIwith107(16%)of678illnesses.Inmultivariatelogisticregressionanalysis,myalgiawaslesslike
5、lywithHCoVinfectionthanwithLDI(OR,0.27[95%confidencelimit,0.13–0.58]).AmajorityoftheseHCoVandLDIillnessesexhibitedeachof11symptomsandsignsofacuterespiratoryillness.SpirometricresultsworsenedmostoftenwithLDI,andmanyacuterespiratoryillnesses,regardlessofetiology,wereassociat
6、edwithhospitalization.Atotalof8illnesseswereassociatedwithHCoV-NL63,1withHCoV-HKU1.Conclusions.ThefrequenciesofHCoVandLDIillnessesweresimilar.HCoVillnesswaslessseverethanLDIillness,wasaccompaniedbymultiplerespiratoryandsystemicsymptoms,andwasassociatedwithhospitalization.
