3、irus(BCV)andoftheOC43strainprovidedbytheAmericanTypeCultureCollection(AT).Resultsobtainedwithresialylatederythrocytesindicatedthattheabilityofthevirusestorecognize9-O-acetylatedsialicacidinan~2,6-1inkagedecreasedinthefollowingorder:AT>CU>BCV>VA.Onlymin
4、ordifferenceswereobservedwithrespecttothe~2,3-1inkage.TheaminoacidsequenceoftheSproteinofstrainCUandVAwasderivedfromthenucleotidesequenceoftheclonedgene.StrainVAdifferedfromstrainCUin34positions,18intheS1and16inthe$2subunit.Coronavirusesaremembersofthe
5、familyCoronaviridaethatcompriseslarge,single-strandedRNAviruseswithpositivegenomepolarity.Thevirionsarecomposedofanucleocapsidprotein(N)andtwoorthreeglycoproteins,respect-ively.Theglycoproteinsincludethesurfaceprotein(S),thehemagglutinin-esterase(HE)an
6、dthemembraneprotein(M).ThepresenceofanHEproteinisacharacteristicfeatureofaserologicalsubgroupofcoronavirusesthatincludeshumancoronavirusOC43(HCV-OC43),bovinecoronavirus(BCV),mousehepatitisvirus(MHV)andhemagglutinatingencephalomyelitisvirus(forre-*Prese

8、iruscausesseverediarrhoeainnewborncalves.TheSproteinisamaintargetoftheimmuneresponsetocoronavirusinfectionsandplaysanimportantroleforthebindingofvirionstocellsurfacereceptorsandforthesubsequentpenetrationbyfusionoftheviralenvelopewithth
