2、itsagainstthestructuralcomponentsofhumancoronavirusstrain229Eandmousehepatitisvirusstrain3,preparedfromdisruptedvirusparticles.Hyperimmuneseratothesubcomponentsshowedcross-reactionsbyenzyme-linkedimmunosorbentassaybetweenribonucleoproteinantigensoftheseviruses,indicating
3、thepresenceofacommonantigen(s).Noneoftheothervirusstructuralcomponentsshowedanycross-reactivity.TheCoronaviridaeareagroupoflarge,envelopedvirusesrangingindiameterfrom80to200nmandpossessingdistinctiveclub-shapedsurfaceprojectionsofupto20nminlength(Mclntosh,1974;Tyrrelleta
4、l.,1978).Theyallhavearibonucleoprotein(RNP)complexcontainingasinglehighmol.wt.single-strandedRNAgenomeandproteinsubunitsofmol.wt.about50000.Theantigenicrelationshipsofthesevirusesiscomplex,althoughantigenicgroupingshavebeenattempted(Pedersenetal.,1978).Twocoronaviruses,h
5、umancoronavirus(HCV)strain229Eandmousehepatitisvirus(MHV)strain3,havebeenshowntobeserologicallydistinct(Mclntoshetal.,1969;Pedersenetal.,1978;Kraaijeveldetal.,1980).TreatmentofpurifiedvirusparticleswithNonidetP40(NP40)followedbysucrosedensitygradientcentrifugationresulte
6、dintheseparationofvirusstructuralcomponents,comprisingsurfaceprojections,membraneandRNPcomponents(Hasony&Macnaughton,1981;Macnaughtonetal.,1981).Thishaspermittedthepreparationofantiseraspecificforeachofthesesubviralcomponents.Inthispaperwehaveusedanenzyme-linkedimmunosor
