2、humancoronavirusstrain229E(HCV229E)particlesonthesurfaceofhumandiploid(MRCc)cellswasexamined.Virusparticlesshowedatotallyrandomdistributiononfixedcellsandoncellstowhichvirushadbeenadsorbedinthecold.Amarkedredistributionofvirusparticleswasobservedonwarmingvirus-ce
3、llpreparationsto33°Cfor20rain,theperipheralareasofthecellbecomingrelativelydevoidofvirusparticleswhilethemajorityofparticleswerenowlocatedsomedistancefromtheedgeofthecell.Redistributiondidnotoccurinthepresenceofmetabolicinhibitors.INTRODUCTIONViropexisisthemodeof
4、cellularentryforanumberofvirusgroups(Dales,1973),includingcoronaviruses(Patterson&Bingham,1976).Thedistributionandpointofentryofvirusparticlesonthecellsurfacehas,however,receivedlittleattention.Duringthepastdecadeithasbeendemonstratedthatthebindingofbivalentantib
5、ody(Tayloretal.,1971),ormultivalentligands(Smith&Hollers,1970)toplasmamembranereceptorscanleadtoanenergy-dependentredistributionoftheboundreceptors.Theprincipalrequirementforsucharedistributionisthattheligandbeatleastdivalentandthusallowtheformationofacross-linke
6、dtwo-dimensionalmatrix.Virusparticleshaveattheirsurfacerepeatingsubunits,thefunctionofwhichistoenabletheviriontobindtothesurfaceofasusceptiblecell.Thus,avirusparticlemaybeconsideredtobeamultivalentligandwiththecapacitytoformacross-linkedmatrixwithitsappropriatece
7、llularreceptormolecules.Suchbindingmayresultinaredistributionofvirusparticlesonthecellsurfacebymechanismssimilartothoseoperatinginantibody-orlectin-mediatedcapping.Recentinvestigationswithapicornavirussuggestthatsucharedistributioncanoccur(Gschwender&Traub,1979).
