2、onavirus(HCV)isolatedbetween1974and1976havebeenstudiedinvitroandinvolunteers.Allstrainscausedcoldsinvolunteers,andthosecultivableintissueculture(TC)producedsignificantlymorecoryzaandlesssorethroatthanstrainsgrowingonlyinorganculture(OC).TheTCstrainswereserologicallyrelatedto229E

3、,buttheseisolatesproducedcoldswithafrequencyandseveritythatcontrastedwiththeeffectsof229Eitself.Testsonvolunteers’preinfectionserashowedthattheprevalenceofantibodyto229Ehadincreasedduringtheperiod1961-1979andthatduring1977-1979only11%ofsubjectshadnoneutralisingantibodyagainst229

4、E.Susceptibilitytothe229E-relatedisolatesPRandTOwasassociatedwithlowpreinfectionserumneutralisingantibodyagainstthehomologousvirus,andpairedserafrequentlyshowedfourfoldorgreaterantibodyrises,mostcommonlyagainstthehomologousstrain.VolunteersinfectedwithTOwereimmunewhenreinoculate
