2、ylamidegelelectrophoresisrevealedfourmajorstructuralpolypeptideswithapparenttool.wt.of203800(gp204),49800(p50),31800(gp32)and21600(gp22).Incorporationof3H-glucosamineintogp204,gp32andgp22indicatedthatthesewereglycopolypeptides.ComparisonofthestructuralpolypeptidesofCCVandporcinetransmissibl
3、egastroenteritisvirus(TGEV)byco-electrophoresisdemonstratedthatTGEVpolypeptidescorrespondedclosely,butnotidentically,withgp204,p50andgp32ofCCVandconfirmedthatgp22wasamajorstructuralcomponentonlyinthecaninevirus.Theclosesimilaritiesinstructureofthetwocoronavirusesaugmentstherelationshipestab
4、lishedbyserology.Thefirstsuggestionthatavirusantigenicallyrelatedtoporcinetransmissiblegastro-enteritisvirus(TGEV)wascapableofinfectingdogscamefromNormanetal.(1970).TheirsurveyofcanineserarevealedantibodytoTGEVinAmericandogsthathadneverbeenincontactwithpigsandwouldnothavebeeninfectedwithTGE
5、V.AsubsequentreportfromtheU.K.(Cartwright&Lucas,1972)identifiedrisingtitresofantibodytoTGEVinakennelof40dogsinwhichanoutbreakofvomitinganddiarrhoeahadoccurred.Onceagaintherewasnoknowncontactofthedogswithpigs.ThepossibilitythatTGEV-neutralizingantibodiesresultedfromexposureofdogstoTGEV,witht
6、ransmissionfromdogtodog,couldnotbeexcluded,however,sinceHaelterman(1962)hadclearlydemonstratedthatdogsandfoxescouldbeinfectedwiththeporcinevirus.TherewerenoclinicalsignsbutTGEV-neutralizingantibodieswereproducedintheserumandviruswasisolatedfromfaecesoftheinfectedanimals.Thesubjectwaspartial
7、lyresolved,however,whenBinnetal.(1975)reportedtheisolationofacanineentericcoronavirusfromAmericanmilitarydogsin1971.Thevirus,designated1-71,couldbetransmittedexperimentallytopuppies,resultinginacutegastroenteritisanddehydration,butattemptstoinfectnewborn
