3、majorneuropathologicalfindinginAE,whichdevelopedwithin6-12dayspi.consistedofnecrotizinglesionsdistributedmainlyinthegreymatterofthecentralnervoussystem(CNS).SDEdeveloped14-30dayspi.andaffectedratsrevealedlesionsofprimarydemyelinationwithpredilectionsitesinthewhitematter.Thetime-coursefort
4、hedevelopmentoflesions,virusreplicationandneutralizingantiviralantibodyproductionwithinthefirst3weeksp.i.werestudied.Withinthefirst2weeksp.i.,mostratsshowednoclinicalsignsbutneverthelessrevealedlesionstypicalofAE.Inparalleltotheseneuropathologicalchangesinfectiousviruscouldbeisolatedfromb
5、rainandspinalcord.However,coincidingwithmultiplicationofneutralizingJHMantibodiesl(f12daysafterinfectionnoinfectiousviruswasrecoverablefromCNSmaterial.AtthistimemanyoftheclinicallyhealthyratsshoweddemyelinatinglesionswhichwerelocatedatthetypicalpredilectionsitesofSDE.Theseobservationsindi
6、catedthatSDEwasprecededbyclinicallysilentAElesions.IntroductionInvestigationsofcentralnervoussystem(CNS)diseasesinmanandanimalshaveshownthatvirusescaninducedemyelinationbyvariousmechanisms(Weiner&Stohlman,1978;terMeulen&Hall,1978).Onepossiblewayisthedirecteffectofvirusreplicationleadingto
