2、sultsareappliedtoa6x19Sealeropewithanindependentwireropecore.Thelinearizationpermitsaconsiderablesim•plificationinthetheorysothattheresultscanreadilybeappliedtoothertypesofcrosssections.Expressionsarepresentedforthestressesintherope,andthemaximumtensilestr
3、essisalsodetermined.Aload-deformationcurveofaSealeropeisobtainedexperimentally,andtheresultsarecomparedwiththetheory.INTRODUCTIONManyinvestigationshaveappearedrecentlytodeterminethebehaviorofthinrodssubjectedtovariousloads.Theapplicationoftheevolvedtheorie
4、stothoseproblemsassociatedwithwireropeisreviewedinasurveyarticlebyCostello(2),whereintheinterestedreadercanfindmanyappropriatereferences.Thispresentworkisanextensionofthefric-tionlesstheory,employedbyCostello,PhillipsandMiller(1,3,6),towireropeswithcomplex
5、crosssections.Intheresearchmentionedthusfar,anexactsolutiontothenonlinearequationsofequilibriumofathinhelicalrodispresented.Thesolutionisutilizedtodeterminethetruenonlinearbehaviorofasimplewirestrandsubjectedtoanaxialforceandanaxialtwistingmoment.Inthispre
6、sentwork,thesolutionislinearizedandatheoryisobtainedthatisvalidformostcasesofpracticalinterest.Sincethelinearizationresultsinacon•siderablesimplification,thetheorycanbeextendedtoropeswithcom•plexcrosssectionswithrelativeease.Anexampleisworkedoutfora6X19Sea
7、leropewithanindependentwireropecore(IWRC),andtheresultsarecomparedwithanexperiment.ANALYSISSomeoftheequationspresentedarederivedinEqs.1,3,and6andarelistedhereagainforcompleteness.Fig.1showsthecrosssectionofaloadedsimplestrand,whichconsistsinitiallyofastrai
