2、raelReceived4November2003;receivedinrevisedform4November2003AbstractAnewmodelforsimulatingthemechanicalresponseofawireropewithanindependentwireropecoreispresented.Theropeissubjectedtobothanaxialloadandanaxialtorque.Incontrastwithpreviousmodelsthatconsidertheeffectiveresponseof
3、woundstrands,thepresentmodelfullyconsidersthedouble-helixconfigurationofindividualwireswithinthewoundstrand.Thisenablestodirectlyrelatethewirelevelstresstotheoverallloadappliedattheropelevel.Themodelassumesafiberresponseofindividualwires.Twoalternativekinematicsofthewiresarecon
4、sidered,andareusedtopredicttheelasticresponseoftherope.Thepostulatedkinematicsaretheoreticallyvalidatedandthepredictedroperesponseisinagreementwithnewexperimentaldata.Thenewmodelenablestheextractionofthestressatthewirelevelthatcanbeusedinturntoestimateglobalfeaturesoftheropes
